Gunships are small and agile vessels used in several supporting roles from single assignments to major fleet engagements. The size of the class varies between 35 and 55 meters, and is lightly armed and armored which makes them vulnerable when alone. Its speed and agility makes it perfect for 'hit and run' missions; the light armor, weak shields and lack of multiple turret hardpoints are compensated by its ability to evade slower plasma rounds and the fast charging of their sublight engines comes handy in desperate situations.

Unlike in SPG2, all starships can go to the same maximum speed of 600 m/s without a propulsion enhancement. Most gunships won't be able to last long in a fight with a bigger fish, so fight what you can, and board as many ships as you can with them. The main advantage of Gunships in Warlords is their immense maneuverability and their quick reflexes. They're also capable of boarding corvettes without much issue, and with more perks, they can become a formidable foe against the smaller ships. Do note that gunships are very flimsy, compared with the other ships, and that facing something too big with only one, like a large battlefleet or a single Destroyer will be too much for them without serious optimization. They're still very useful for scouting, though. Your Headquarters can also produce large amounts of Gunships, which can be useful early on if you put them as an escort for your own. They won't have the same coordination as the A'Shriari outside the Gemini System, however.

To resume, the Gunship is not as useless as some may think, but it isn't very useful either.
